France players in tears after Euro 2016 loss to Portugal - Noel Le Graet

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet has said that many of the host country's players were in tears after Sunday's 1-0 loss against Portugal in the Euro 2016 final.

France missed several chances and were made to pay in extra-time when substitute Eder thumped home the only goal for Portugal in the 109th minute.

Speaking on RMC and BFM TV on Monday, Le Graet revealed that many of the French squad were inconsolable following the shock loss at the Stade de France.

"The players were very sad after the defeat," Le Graet said.

"I saw solid guys crying for a long time. They were dejected.

"Blaise Matuidi was very sad. Christophe Jallet was crying like a child, Olivier Giroud had trouble getting over it and Patrice Evra too. Everyone was shattered."

Speaking after the game, Matuidi said France would have some regrets about the final but that fatigue had played a part in their defeat.

"We saw that we created chances even if we were lacking a bit of freshness and energy," Paris Saint-Germain midfielder told L'Equipe. "But there was no success and tiredness added itself by the end. The Portuguese had the merit of believing until the end."

Tigres striker Andre-Pierre Gignac came closest to scoring the opening goal for France when the substitute hit the post at the end of normal time.

The former Marseille forward said the final had turned out to be "a nightmare" for France.

"It's football but it's terrible -- really terrible," Gignac told reporters.

"We're going to have to digest this even if it will be hard. We're going to have s--- holidays."

Moussa Sissoko was one of France's best performers on the night and the Newcastle midfielder believes his team can learn from the pain they are experiencing.

"There's a lot of disappointment," he told RMC.

"We wanted to win this tournament at home. Everything was set up for us to be able to do it.

"We just lacked that little bit of success that would have allowed us to score a goal.

"That's football. To dominate is not to win. We should congratulate Portugal.

"We're going to have to try to digest this. It's a defeat that of course hurts very badly but we will come back stronger."
