Portugal score in extra time as Poland win on penalties, Wales beat N. Ireland

Portugal scored deep into extra time to advance to a quarterfinal against Poland, while Wales also moved on with a win at Euro 2016 on Saturday.

Ricardo Quaresma scored in the 117th minute as Portugal defeated Croatia 1-0.

The game was a cagey affair in which neither team put a shot on target in regulation time, and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo did not line up a single attempt until setting up the game-winning goal.

Moments after Croatia hit the post at the other end of the pitch, Portugal struck on the counter-attack, and keeper Danijel Subasic could only parry Ronaldo's shot into Quaresma's path.

The ball bounced up nicely for Quaresma, who could not miss with a header on the goal line, and Portugal took the lead against the run of play.

Portugal set up a quarterfinal against Poland, who got past Switzerland 5-4 on penalties earlier in the day, the game ending 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Kamil Grosicki squeezed a pass through for Jakub Blaszczykowski to score the opener in the 39th minute, but with eight minutes to play, Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri delivered a spectacular bicycle kick for the equaliser.

However, there was heartbreak for the Swiss supporters when Grzegorz Krychowiak scored the decisive penalty in the shootout, after Switzerland's Granit Xhaka smashed his spot kick well wide.

Wales made the last eight of as an own goal from Northern Ireland's Gareth McAuley settled a tense 1-0 game in Paris.

Aaron Ramsey found Gareth Bale in space on the wing and he made the most of it with a perfect ball into the box between McAuley and goalkeeper Michael McGovern.

McAuley had to intervene with the substitute Hal Robson-Kanu lurking behind, but his touch from a few yards out was a fatal one for Northern Ireland.

Wales will face the winners of Sunday's game between Hungary and Belgium.
