Italy not 'relaxing over tea' with Republic of Ireland - Antonio Conte

Italy coach Antonio Conte insists his side will not be relaxing over a cup of tea when they face Republic of Ireland in Lille on Wednesday night.

The Squadra Azzurra have already booked their place in the last 16 as group winners while Ireland need three points to have a chance of joining them.

Conte has promised he is not going to be the bearer of gifts for the Irish, however.

"It's not a game where we can just have a chamomile tea," Conte said at a news conference. "Ireland are tough opponents. We're already through, but this doesn't mean anything. Even in our last qualifying game against Norway we were already through, but we beat them and forced them into a playoff and they didn't qualify.

"You may think it's a pointless game, but I don't think it's pointless and my choices will be made to give me important answers."

Conte confirmed that he will be making "between seven and nine changes" to his side, but that this does not mean he is taking the game lightly.

"Let's not forget that this [Ireland] beat Germany in qualification, and you don't do that just because you have one good, lucky day," Conte said. "All the lads help each other and they are very compact and physical. We're going to have to be careful because it's the game of their lives, and we don't want to make fools of ourselves, and you can rest assured of that.

"Italy's first team played Belgium, Italy's first team played Sweden and our first team will have played against Ireland -- we are one team.

"There is no such thing as a first-choice team and reserves. We have 23 players who win and lose together, including all the staff."

Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon, who revealed how he expects to be one of the players left out by Conte, shared his coach's view that they must seek to beat Ireland to keep their momentum going.

"We still need to give everything now because if we drop any of the ingredients, we could take a step back and we cannot allow this," he said. "We've created this privileged position, so to say, of being through after two games but we know full well what we have had to do to get here and we know well what we need to do to get more satisfaction."
