Euro 2016 pitches have been a problem - Local Organising Committee

The head of Euro 2016's Local Organising Committee has said measures will be taken to address the poor quality of pitches at the tournament.

Playing surfaces used for the competition, particularly in Lille and Marseille, have come in for criticism from France manager Didier Deschamps among others.

Jacques Lambert said he regretted the condition of some pitches but declined to clarify what exactly would be done to improve the situation.

"The pitches that were good three months ago are good today," he told L'Equipe. "Those that were average are still average, and those that are poor have remained that way."

Deschamps branded the turf in Marseille a "disaster" after France's 1-0 over Albania last week, blaming the fact that an AC/DC concert was held there a month before the game.

On Sunday he was annoyed again because the pitch at Lille's Stade Pierre-Mauroy was badly cut up for France's 0-0 draw with Switzerland.

Le Journal du Dimanche reported that in advance of that match an attempt was made to paint the surface green so that it would look better on TV.

Lambert said that UEFA and local organisers had little time to make improvements before the event got underway because they only got access to the pitches at the end of the French league season in mid-May.

"Given the quality of certain pitches it was decided to change them," Lambert explained.

"In Nice, where there wasn't a problem, but also in Lille and Marseille, where it hasn't brought about the expected results because they don't match what we have the right to expect at a European Championship. That's unquestionable.

"The provider was, however, UEFA's. They had solid references. I'm not a specialist on pitches but it's clear that there's been a problem.

"But we've had the stadiums under our control for four weeks. And it's not in that period of time that we can modify the quality of an existing pitch in a decisive way, except by purely and simply changing it."

UEFA are said to be considering relaying surfaces again before the end of the tournament.

There will be particular concern about the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Lille is due to host three more games, including Italy and Republic of Ireland's Group E encounter on Wednesday, one quarterfinal and one semifinal.
