Portugal manager backs Cristiano Ronaldo to score against Hungary

Cristiano Ronaldo has been backed to break his European Championship duck by manager Fernando Santos when Portugal take on Hungary on Wednesday.

Ronaldo has endured a difficult opening to the tournament, publicly criticising Iceland following a frustrating 1-1 draw and failing to score against Austria after missing a penalty and having a header ruled out for offside in the 0-0.

But manager Santos has backed Ronaldo to find his range against Hungary in Lyon.

"Ronaldo is a player who scores a lot of goals and I'm sure he will score in the next game against Hungary," said Santos.

Portugal dominated much of the goalless draw with Austria, firing in 23 shots and hitting the woodwork twice.

"It was the first time we failed to score during my reign," Santos said. "We created so many chances, we didn't score, but I think we will next time out.

Portugal must win against Hungary in Lyon on Wednesday to be sure of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament, with their opponents top of Group F following a late equaliser against Iceland last time out.
