Albania bring "huge joy" to fans with Euro win vs. Romania - De Biasi

Albania manager Gianni De Biasi knows his team brought great joy to his team's fans after earning a historic 1-0 win versus Romania at Euro 2016, the country's first in a major international competition.

Armando Sadiku's first-half header -- the country's first goal at a Euro -- clinched Albania their maiden win at a major tournament and first against Romania in 68 years to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2016 knockout stages.

The team now must wait for group play to conclude to see if their third-placed finish in Group A merits passage to the knockout rounds in France.

"We will have to prepare as if we'll be playing on Friday or Saturday," De Biasi told a news conference. "We'll watch the other games and get ready. If we stay, we can cause trouble to other teams - even big teams.

"I think we grew in confidence tonight. We needed the first two games to settle into the tournament. I hope we can stay. I'm a positive person and I think we deserve it. We've shown we can play these games against top teams."

Albania's start to the match might have left fans feeling nervous, as Romania were the better of the two teams in the match's first 20 minutes. However, De Biasi said part of that slow start was tactical.

"We wanted to wait for Romania and try to find spaces and attack them," he said. "We were expecting a strong start from them but we defended very well, closed the spaces and tried to counterattack.

"They tried attacking us with midfielder and defenders, and it wasn't easy to find space. We made some mistakes, but that was the best strategy."

Asked how the historic win and chance to advance at Euro 2016 would be received at home, De Biasi predicted "huge joy" for Albanians all over the world.

He said: "I'm sure we gave huge joy to the Albanian fans. Not just the Albanians in Albania, but Albanians who live around the world. Wherever we go, we've found fans who just want to show support and gratitude for what we do.

"Today, we got what we could've got in the first two games: you need to score to get results. We contained a team that has quality and strength and conceded just two goals in qualifying.

"We got there with heart and quality. We played with our heads and mental strength. This is what I'd like us to do in every game."
