Russian sports minister won't rule out more Euro 2016 violence

Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko said on Wednesday he could not rule out Russia fans being involved in more violence at Euro 2016 because they were "constantly being provoked," the TASS news agency reported via Reuters.

A 2-1 defeat to Slovakia on Wednesday leaves Russia likely to need a win from their final group game against Wales to avoid elimination.

UEFA fined Russia's football federation €150,000 and handed them a suspended disqualification from the tournament after crowd disturbances at the game against England in Marseille on Saturday.

Any further incidents of crowd disturbance inside grounds at Russia's matches will see the team thrown out.

"I do not have any certainty that disorder involving Russian fans will not be repeated," TASS quoted Mutko as saying.

"Our fans are constantly being provoked. And whatever happens, it is immediately said that the Russians are guilty."

France violated "all commitments of the Vienna Convention" when police detained Russia fans, Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, said in a speech at the Russian parliament on Wednesday.

"French authorities were obliged to inform our embassy or the consulate general in Marseille at that very moment when they carried out the detention, but this was not done," he said, adding that he had written to urge the French foreign minister "not to let similar violations happen again."

In southern France, a bus carrying 29 Russian fans was stopped near the city of Nice on Tuesday amid concerns over further hooligan violence.

An unspecified number of fans have been taken to detention centres, prefecture head of communications Ariane Parachinia said.
