Iceland fans made team feel 'at home' in Portugal draw - Hallgrimsson

Iceland co-manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said his team felt as if they were playing at home in their opening draw with Portugal because of the incredible fan support at Euro 2016.

The match versus Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal was the first for Iceland in any major international competition, meaning the 1-1 result gave the team their first points ever at a European Championship.

Hallgrimsson, who co-manages the Iceland with Swedish manager Lars Lagerback, called the point a positive and put his team in a good position to advance to the knockout round from Group F, which also includes Hungary and Austria.

"It was so fantastic to play here. It was like our home," Hallgrimsson said. "Our fans were unbelievable. It was just like home. It helped the players very much.

"I don't think that the [Hungary-Austria game] affects us so much. It's really good to have a point. We can go a little bit more relaxed into the next game. But with a win against Hungary, we are probably nearly there."

ESPN's Soccer Power Index has Iceland with a 69.5 percent chance to advance to the knockout round, while Portugal have an 85.7 percent chance.

The Iceland co-boss, who also holds a day job as a dentist in his native country, hailed the team's defensive effort that kept Ronaldo off the scoresheet despite numerous chances for the Portuguese.

He said: "It's down to teamwork. You can't put one player to stop a guy like Ronaldo. It has to be a team effort, closing the areas.

"There were a lot of players responsible for Ronaldo tonight. We did a really good job, well done the lads."
