Euro 2016 starts Friday as hosts France take on Romania. In advance of the feast of football, we researched the players and teams that stood out during qualifying via a variety of statistical metrics with the aim of shedding a little extra light on the action over the next month.
Here's a look at statistical standouts from Euro qualifying, those players and teams that led key categories -- ranging from chances created to tackles -- along with a full rank of each team's attack and defence, as calculated by ESPN's expected goal model.
For inclusion here, players had to play a minimum of 450 minutes (about five full matches) during Euro qualifying. Also, France, as tournament hosts, did not have to qualify and thus there is no qualifying data for Les Bleus....
