Roy Hodgson admits Marcus Rashford selection headache for Euro 2016

Roy Hodgson admitted he has a selection headache ahead of him after Marcus Rashford became the youngest player ever to score on his England debut.

At the age of 18 years and 208 days, Manchester United striker Rashford scored in the third minute, giving England a 1-0 lead against Australia at the Stadium of Light on Friday. His United teammate Wayne Rooney also struck as England went on to a 2-1 victory in the friendly.

England manager Hodgson has until Tuesday to name his squad for Euro 2016, when he must trim the current group of 26 down to 23.

Speaking to ITV Sport after the win over Australia, Hodgson said: "I've got until Tuesday. I said in the press conference [on Thursday] that he certainly would not be out of place in anybody's 23, but I've got difficult decisions and choices to make. I don't intend to tell anyone tonight about my thoughts on the subject."

Discussing the player's display, Hodgson said: "I'm pleased for him. He obviously tired a bit in the second half but that's pretty normal when you're playing your first game.

"What a debut. You asked me before the game if I thought he would be up for it or capable of dealing with the situation and I think we got a resounding 'yes' to go with that question."

Rashford had been given his chance in the squad after Danny Welbeck's injury, then he was given his place in the starting lineup after Daniel Sturbridge was deemed unfit. The United striker also gained his chance at club level when Anthony Martial was injured in the warm-up against FC Midtjylland in February and he went on to score twice on that occasion.

Rashford's debut goal for England came when he struck from eight yards, in front of his mother in the crowd, following a deflected cross from Raheem Sterling.

The 18-year-old went off to a standing ovation when Ross Barkley came on to replace him.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson predicted that Rashford can become a "very big player for United and England" if he keeps working hard.

Henderson said: "It's incredible really. That is the season he's had. He has no fear and wants the ball all the time.

"It was a great finish. He's got everything -- good on ball, good movement and good finishing.

"If given the opportunity [to be in Euro 2016 squad], I'm sure he will do well but it depends on the manager."
