France boss Didier Deschamps hopes Jeremy Mathieu will be fit for Euros

France coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed that Jeremy Mathieu has suffered a calf strain, but believes that the Barcelona defender will be fit to play at Euro 2016.

Deschamps called Sevilla centre-back Adil Rami into his squad on Tuesday after deciding it would be too much of a risk to retain Real Madrid's injured Raphael Varane.

Varane, 23, has been ruled out due to a thigh problem and Mathieu, 32, said earlier this week that he felt ready to replace him in the starting eleven.

But L'Equipe reported on Wednesday that Mathieu felt discomfort in his calf after Barcelona's 2-0 extra-time win over Sevilla in Sunday's Copa del Rey final.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Deschamps confirmed that Mathieu will not take part in France's friendly against Cameroon on Monday. But he hopes that the former Valencia player can play some part in their final pre-tournament warm-up game against Scotland on June 4.

"It's not serious in itself," Deschamps said of Mathieu's injury. "I'm going to wait a few days to have more precise information. What's certain is that he won't be available for the match in Nantes.

"Now we need to know if it's possible that he might be there for the second game."

Mathieu, who can play in central defence or at left-back, has only recently returned from a knee injury.

Deschamps also explained why he called up Rami to replace Varane, rather than Lyon's Samuel Umtiti, who had been named ahead of the Sevilla defender on a standby list.

"For me playing with two left footers in the centre of defence is not something that's viable," Deschamps said. "I saw Samuel. I explained the situation to him. I can understand that he might be disappointed.

"If I took Samuel, it's not a reward -- it's because I have confidence in hm. The fact I have not taken him [to replace Varane] is only in relation to this problem of left footers and complementarity."
