Real Madrid's Karim Benzema hopeful over France place at Euro 2016

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is optimistic about his chances of being allowed to play for France at Euro 2016.

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet and France coach Didier Deschamps are meeting on Wednesday to decide if the player's suspension from the national team should be lifted.

Benzema, 28, was suspended after being charged with conspiracy to blackmail last November. The charge relates to an investigation into an attempt to extort money from his France teammate Mathieu Valbuena using a sex tape.

Speaking after Real Madrid beat Wolfsburg 3-0 on Tuesday to qualify for the Champions League semifinals, Benzema said he is relaxed about the situation.

"Personally, I feel good," Benzema told BeIN Sports. "I'm playing for the biggest team in the world.

"I fight every day to earn my place. The French team, as I've always said, is close to my heart. Every player dreams of taking part in a competition on home soil.

"We'll see what the president says -- I don't know if it's tomorrow or Thursday [that he will announce the decision]. My state of mind is, like I say every time, calm and peaceful. I hope it will be good news in any case."

Benzema posted a message on his Facebook page on Wednesday that said: "No matter what happens, once Bleu, always Bleu!!!"

Benzema was also quoted by Le Monde as telling reporters after the game that he had always been confident that he could make a return to the French squad.

"If I didn't want to [play at Euro 2016], I would have held a press conference long ago and would have said that I didn't want to join up with the French team," Benzema said.

"The French team means a lot to me, especially a European Championships at home."

Benzema stands accused of accepting a request from a childhood friend to act as an intermediary between the blackmailers and Lyon winger Valbuena. He denies any wrongdoing.

Last month, Le Graet promised to announce a decision on the former Lyon forward's future with the national team before April 15.
