Paris fan zone for Euro 2016 to be set up in Champ-de-Mars - council

Paris City Council has voted for its Euro 2016 fan zone to be set up at the Champ-de-Mars in the affluent seventh arrondissement of the French capital.

A giant TV screen will be installed at the large green space, which is within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower, and fans will be invited to watch matches there during each day of this summer's tournament.

Wednesday's decision did not meet with universal approval as Les Republicains, the centre-right party headed by former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, objected to it on security grounds.

Philippe Goujon of Les Republicains said that 90,000 fans were being called "to gather every day for a month at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. What temptation for terrorists of all kinds."

According to Le Monde, Goujon is concerned that the current plan envisages only 350 private security guards being on site to help guarantee supporters' safety.

However, Le Monde also said city and police representatives had promised that security at the venue would be identical to that of stadiums and would include police dog teams and video surveillance.

Lagardere Sports have been tasked with the design and operation of the fan zone in return for a licence fee of €150,000, payable to the city, as well as a portion of the profits.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, said that the tournament should be "a big celebration for the biggest number of people but at the same time secure."
