Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira is expected to spend several weeks on the sidelines after the German FA (DFB) confirmed he had suffered a thigh injury.
The DFB's official website said Khedira had sustained the injury with his club and had been assessed on Tuesday after linking up with the national team.
An MRI scan revealed the 27-year-old had suffered a tear to his left thigh. Leading German tabloid Bild suggests he is likely to be out for around six weeks, although the DFB made no suggestion as to the prognosis.
The injury leaves Khedira with no chance of facing Argentina in Wednesday's friendly or Scotland in Sunday's European Championship qualifier.
Khedira had also missed World Cup final victory over Argentina in July as the result of a calf injury.
