Brewin: Euro 2016 Dream Team

Euro 2016

With Italy's national team struggling, Pelle might be Azzurri's savior

Graziano Pelle scored a late winner to give Italy three crucial points in a 1-0 victory over Malta in Euro 2016 qualifying Group H.
Italy head coach Antonio Conte was focused on the bigger picture as Graziano Pelle scored a controversial winner to see off Malta 1-0 in Euro 2016 qualifying.

Graziano Pelle is quite the forgetful man. Italy's Euro 2016 qualifier against Malta on Thursday had barely finished when a reporter from national broadcaster Rai thrust a microphone in the striker's face and asked him which part of his body he had used to score the Azzurri's only goal, which won the game. "I don't remember," replied Pelle. "I'd have to watch a replay first."

Those of us who had already seen the TV footage knew that Pelle had diverted Antonio Candreva's cross into the net with an...

France's Karim Benzema as important as Cristiano Ronaldo - Deschamps

Former France international Luis Fernandez speaks about pressure on France as hosts of Euro 2016.
Didier Deschamps and Pierre Mankowski believe former Monaco forward Anthony Martial will succeed with his new club Manchester United.

France coach Didier Deschamps has praised star striker Karim Benzema, saying his team are better when the Real Madrid man is playing.

Benzema, who was linked with a move to Arsenal over the summer, is set to start up front alongside Lyon striker Nabil Fekir in Friday's friendly against Portugal.

"The presence of Karim is very important," Deschamps told a news conference. "He's a top-level player who has international experience.

"He's not going to resolve everything by himself, but Karim is Karim...

Euro 2016 Forecaster: Several seeded teams in danger of not qualifying

Germany coach Joachim Loew and midfielder Mario Gotze look ahead to their crunch Euro 2016 Group D qualifiers against Poland and Scotland.

The penultimate week of Euro 2016 group qualifying begins on Thursday, and 17 different countries could clinch a spot in France by Tuesday. The qualifying campaign has been rife with upsets, resulting in only two of the nine seeded teams currently being on top of their groups.

With the forgiving nature of qualifying, not all of the seeds are in danger of being eliminated. Each group's top two teams qualify automatically for Euro 2016. The best team of the nine third-place clubs also gets a direct berth, and the other eight third-place teams enter playoffs for the final four spots.

But as it stands, ESPN's Soccer Power Index (SPI) forecasts three seeded teams to finish outside the top two when the group stage concludes in October. Based on 10,000 simulations of the remaining games, here's how SPI sees the groups playing out, with a focus on how the top seeds are performing. Roy Hodgson: England must step it up to be Euro 2016 contenders

Euro 2016 may be almost a year away, but England are one team who can all but guarantee their participation in the tournament in France over the next week.
England's Jonjo Shelvey looks ahead to the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland, where he was delighted to be involved in the squad.

England coach Roy Hodgson has told his players they must step up their performances if they want to have a chance of winning Euro 2016.

Hodgson's team will qualify for the European Championship if they beat San Marino on Saturday and Slovenia fail to defeat Switzerland.

Group E contains some of the weaker sides in Europe, and Hodgson was keen to stress that his players must not rest on their laurels if qualification is secured at the weekend.

"The manager said we can either go one way, keep winning...
