When is Euro 2016?

Key Dates

Euro 2016 Forecast: Will Netherlands, Ireland miss out?

The ESPN FC crew share their thoughts on the Netherlands' chances of qualifying for Euro 2016 as they trail Turkey by two points in Group A.

The final week of UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying begins on Thursday, and 15 berths will be claimed by Oct. 13.

Though only five berths have been officially claimed (Austria, Czech Republic, England and Iceland, plus host France), most of the top teams have nearly sewn up their spots. That means the remaining drama lies largely in teams jockeying between second place (and an automatic berth) and third place (and a playoff), or among countries fighting simply to make the playoffs.

Remember that the top two teams in each of the nine groups qualify directly, along with the best of the nine third-place teams. The other eight third-place teams enter home-and-home playoffs for the final four places in France.

Here's how ESPN's Soccer Power Index forecasts the final games of group play, with odds for qualifying either directly or for the playoffs. All percentages are based on 10,000 SPI simulations. (For more information on SPI, see Nate Silver's explainers here, here and here.)

The nine groups are divided into three categories based on the remaining drama expected:

Olivier Giroud has lost confidence - France boss Didier Deschamps

France head coach Didier Deschamps says he expects Paul Pogba to focus on becoming an efficient player rather than a flamboyant one in the build up to Euro 2016.
French head coach Didier Deschamps believes there is more to come from Manchester United and France starlet Anthony Martial.

France coach Didier Deschamps has acknowledged that Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is going through a tough time at both club and international level.

Deschamps had previously defended Giroud, 29, following the former Montpellier player's below-par display against Serbia last month.

Since then, Giroud was sent off in Arsenal's Champions League loss at Dinamo Zagreb, and has had to be content with a bit-part role in the league with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger currently preferring Theo Walcott...

Ross Barkley should study Roberto Baggio, Francesco Totti - Roy Hodgson

England manager Roy Hodgson says he plans to start experimenting with his starting lineup for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers, rather than waiting until the pre-tournament friendlies next year.
ESPN FC's Alexis Nunes and Steve Nicol discuss the recent England call-ups of Danny Ings and Dele Alli. While Nicol understands Ings' inclusion, he cannot quite understand Alli's.
Roy Hodgson says he has left Daniel Sturridge out of his England squad of his own choice, in the hope it will help him return to fitness fully for the national side's next round of matches in November.

England manager Roy Hodgson has advised Ross Barkley to study footage of Roberto Baggio and Francesco Totti if he intends to become the goalscoring midfielder the national team lacks.

In the first half of last year, Hodgson was reluctant to speak at length about Barkley, and went out of his way to play down the hype surrounding the midfielder in the build-up to the tournament.

At one point during England's pre-World Cup training camp in Miami, Hodgson even refused to answer questions about the then...

Not even Wayne Rooney guaranteed to start at Euro 2016, says Roy Hodgson

ESPN FC's Alexis Nunes and Steve Nicol discuss the recent England call-ups of Danny Ings and Dele Alli. While Nicol understands Ings' inclusion, he cannot quite understand Alli's.
Wayne Rooney, left, is not guaranteed to start at Euro 2016, says Roy Hodgson.

England manager Roy Hodgson will not guarantee any of his players -- including Wayne Rooney -- a place in his starting XI ahead of the European Championship.

Rooney became England's all-time record goalscorer last month when he netted a penalty against Switzerland to break Sir Bobby Charlton's record, which had stood for 45 years.

The England captain has scored 10 goals in his last 12 games for England, but he has not been at his best for Manchester United this season.

The 29-year-old has found...
