Rooney breaks England record, Spain win; Austria qualify as Sweden suffer

England cemented their place at the top of Group E with a 2-0 win over Switzerland that saw Wayne Rooney break the England goal-scoring record.

Roy Hodgson's side had already wrapped up qualification for Euro 2016 with a 6-0 win over San Marino last weekend, but the Swiss were a far tougher proposition and the Three Lions failed to break through.

Manchester City midfielder Fabian Delph was taken off after less than 30 seconds having pulled a hamstring and his replacement Ross Barkley could not spark his side into life despite Rooney coming close on a number of occasions.

It was left to substitute Harry Kane to break the deadlock as the Spurs striker pounced on Luke Shaw's low cross to net in the 67th minute.

Then, when Raheem Sterling was fouled late on, Rooney stepped up to bag his 50th international goal from a penalty.

Elsewhere in Group E, San Marino netted their first away goal since 2001 in a 2-1 defeat to Lithuania. Fiodor Cernych had scored inside eight minutes to put the hosts ahead, but the San Marino minnows hit back through Matteo Vitaioli on 55 minutes.

However, they lost Nicola Chiaruzzi to a red card and Lukas Spalvis broke their hearts with a late winner.

Robert Beric struck to give Slovenia renewed hope of automatic qualification for Euro 2016 with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Estonia in Celje.

Beric broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute but the hosts were forced to withstand late pressure with goalkeeper Samir Handanovic making a fine save to deny Konstantin Vassiljev an equaliser two minutes from time.

Defending European champions Spain put themselves on the brink of qualification with a 1-0 win over Macedonia thanks to a cross-shot from Juan Mata.

The Manchester United winger may not have meant to score his 25-yard effort from a tight angle, but Spain -- who gave a start to goalkeeper David De Gea -- are five points clear of third-placed Ukraine with two games left.

Indeed, Slovakia held Ukraine 0-0 at home to improve their hopes and keep the gap to three points.

The hosts had two shots on goal in a very level encounter but could not find a way past Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov.

A brace from Mikhail Gordeychuk saw Belarus beat Luxembourg 2-0.

The BATE Borisov midfielder, playing at his club's stadium, put the home side ahead in the 34th minute before adding his second of the night in the 62nd minute as Belarus clinched their first win in six competitive home games.

Martin Harnik scored twice as Austria became the fourth team to secure their place at Euro 2016 with an emphatic 4-1 win over Group G rivals Sweden in Solna.

The hosts' hopes of hanging onto the second qualifying place in the group were hit as early as the ninth minute when David Alaba put the Austrians ahead from the spot.

Stuttgart striker Harnik added his first of the night seven minutes before the break and Marc Janko made the victory certain in the 76th minute.

Harnik's second was followed by a late consolation by Zlatan Ibrahimovic but the Swedes slipped behind Russia to third in the group.

Russia won 7-0 in Liechtenstein, with Artem Dzyuba's four goals leading the rout.

Further strikes came from Fyodor Smolov, Alan Dzagoev and an Aleksandr Kokorin penalty to put them a point clear in second with two games to play.

Also in Group G, an early opener from Stefan Savic and an own goal from Petru Racu gave Montenegro a 2-0 win over Moldova in Chisinau.

Montenegro are now three points behind second-placed Russia and one off Sweden in third, with two games remaining.
