Rijkaard to coach Sparta Rotterdam

ROTTERDAM, July 2 (Reuters) - Former Dutch national coach Frank Rijkaard has been signed to coach first division club Sparta Rotterdam on a three-year contract.

Rijkaard, who played for Ajax Amsterdam and AC Milan and earned 73 caps, has been out of a job since he quit the Dutch national team after the 2000 European championship finals, his first-ever coaching job.

He replaces Willem van Hanegem, another former Dutch international player.

Van Hanegem, former Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar coach, agreed in February to coach relegation-threatened Sparta until the end of the season.

He decided not to extend his stay with the club after helping keep them in the top flight when they saved their place last month's play-offs.

Sparta have never been relegated in their 112-year history.
