Giorgos Karagounis

A hero of Greece’s Euro 2004 triumph, Karagounis scored the opening goal of the tournament as his nation beat hosts Portugal and embarked on their journey to an improbable triumph. However, he was to cruelly miss the ultimate triumph for Greece, as he was suspended for the final against the same Portuguese side.

While he had spells with Inter Milan and Benfica, Karagounis has devoted most of his career to Panathinakos and even though his career must be winding towards a conclusion, he remains a vital cog in Fernando Santos’ Greece midfield, appearing in all ten qualifiers and always showing commitment to the national cause.

With well over a century of international appearances to his credit and a place in Greek soccer folklore assured whatever happens at Euro 2012, this summer’s tournament will merely serve to enhance the legend of this iconic sporting star.
