Italy keeper Buffon out with broken hand

ROME, June 3 (Reuters) - Italy's first choice goalkeeper Gianluca Buffon will miss the European Championships after breaking his hand in Saturday's 1-0 friendly defeat in Norway, the Italian news agency ANSA has reported.

The Parma keeper suffered the injury when he fell badly trying in vain to save John Carew's 53rd minute headed goal in the Oslo match.

He was substituted two minutes later, replaced by Fiorentina's Francesco Toldo, who is now likely to start Italy's Euro 2000 games.

Roma's Francesco Antonioli had been named as Italy's third keeper and coach Dino Zoff has called up AC Milan's Christian Abbiati to join the squad.

Former number one Angelo Peruzzi told Zoff last month that he did not want to be part of the squad if he was only third choice.
