Espanyol sack manager Quique Sanchez Flores after bad run

Quique Sanchez Flores

Quique Sanchez Flores has been sacked as Espanyol coach following a poor run of results.

The Periquitos dismissed the former Watford boss, who returned to Spain from the Premier League side in June 2016, on Friday after less than two years at the helm, along with director of football Jordi Lardin.

Espanyol B coach David Gallego has been placed in temporary charge.

In a statement on their official website, the club said: "Espanyol reports that Jordi Lardin and Quique Sanchez Flores have been relinquished of their roles as sports director and coach of the men's first team, respectively.

"The club have taken this decision as a result of the performance of the first team and with the clear desire to face the remaining rounds of the current season and the preparation of the 2018-19 season in the best conditions."

The La Liga side sit 16th in the table with five matches remaining after a run of just two wins from their last 15 league games and -- more recently -- they have suffered four defeats from their last five matches.

They play Catalan neighbours Girona on Sunday.

The statement continued: "Espanyol thanks Quique Sanchez Flores for his dedication and work in these two seasons at the club, where he has been an important figure leading the side from the bench and wish him the best in his professional future."
