Tottenham confirm home match with Manchester United to be played at Wembley

Tottenham have announced that their Premier League match with Manchester United on Jan. 13 will be played at Wembley as work continues on their new stadium.

United had been unaware of where the game would be played themselves until Wednesday, causing them to delay a ticket ballot for the match.

It will be their 10th home league game of the season moved to the national stadium, with the club reluctant to put a firm date on the opening of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until they receive the required safety certificate.

"Testing is being conducted both during the day and night and our contractors will continue to work during the Christmas period," the club said in a statement. "Barring no further significant issues we should then be in a position to schedule Test Events.

"We shall receive a status report from our contractors in the week commencing 7 Jan. 2019 and will update you thereafter."

Chairman Daniel Levy said he understood supporters' frustration at having to prolong their stay at Wembley further, but that it will be worth the wait to return home.

"We are acutely conscious that we are asking fans to go to Wembley for far longer than any of us wanted to," he said. "However we are now seeing the progress that we needed to see.

"What I don't want to do is set any firm dates until we have finally achieved a safety certificate. So many people tell me to look at other major schemes that run late and, whilst I know it happens often, we are still hugely frustrated.

"It is important, however, to recognise the sheer complexity of the scheme. It will be one of the first fully-integrated digital stadiums and will also be required to meet the latest and most stringent safety regulations."

Tottenham could be able to host their Champions League knockout games at the new stadium after qualifying from Group B on Tuesday night.

Spurs have not hosted a Champions League match at White Hart Lane since April 2011.
