Arsenal's Unai Emery on Petr Cech errors vs. Cardiff: He is doing what we want

Arsenal manager Unai Emery said he wants the defence to continue to build from the back despite several errors against Cardiff City.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech looked especially uncomfortable as he made two errors in distribution while under pressure in the 3-2 win, but Emery backed his goalkeeper to continue and improve.

"He has experience. He is intelligent. He is doing what we want," Emery said. "It's very important for me to continue doing this and to keep improving.

"We take a little risk, but when you break this risk and their pressing, you can find space. We need to continue with this personality."

Mesut Ozil returned to the starting lineup after missing last weekend's win over West Ham through illness and took the place of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was on the bench.

Ozil was ineffective for much of the first half playing on the right wing but got more involved after the break when he started dropping deeper to get the ball.

"Ozil, with his quality, I think we need him to give us his moments in the match," he said. "I think today, in the second half, he played a good match; he worked every minute he was on the pitch. Maybe in the second half, with his position on the pitch, I think he feels better."

Emery started Alexandre Lacazette for the first time this season, and he responded by setting up one goal and scoring the winner in the 81st minute. His connection with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored Arsenal's second goal from a pass by Lacazette, caused problems for Cardiff throughout the game and added more pace to Arsenal's attack.

Emery said Lacazette's goal should boost his confidence, but hinted that the duo won't always start together in the future.

"I know he has a great capacity to score when he's in the box and when the team give him good chances," Emery said. "He has very good scoring data and today he showed us. It's good for his confidence, this match and this goal, plus this victory for the team. Many important things happened today on the pitch.

"We are continuing working on the combination on the pitch between the players, and also keeping our mentality and our ideas. Today, I think the performance of [Aubameyang and Lacazette], with their goals, helped us. We can continue to work to find the best individual performance and quality from each player."
