Son Heung-Min scores for South Korea to reach Asian Games knockout stage

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-Min scored the only goal as South Korea booked their place in the knockout stages of the Asian Games with a 1-0 win over Kyrgyzstan in Jakarta.

Son's 63rd-minute strike sets them up against Iran in the round of 16 on Thursday.

South Korea had lost their second of three group games 2-1 to Malaysia, making the game against Kyrgyzstan a must-win for them to advance from the group stage.

Victory for South Korea at the Games will ensure none of the players there will have to partake in military service.

For Son, one of three designated over-23 players in the squad, this is his last chance to win a major honour with his country in order to gain immunity, with service likely to start in early 2020 should he not win gold.

Son recently signed a new five-year contract at Tottenham, who released their forward for international service in order to avoid further losing him for 21 months of service.
