Manchester United women beat Liverpool with Lizzie Arnot strike

Manchester United women picked up a 1-0 win at Prenton Park against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

United are fielding a women's team for the first time since 2005 and signed seven players from Liverpool this summer, while appointing former England international Casey Stoney as manager.

Lizzie Arnot had the first chance for United but dragged her shot wide of the post early on before Jess Sigsworth headed past the post from a corner.

Neil Redfearn's Liverpool side had the ball in the net just before half-time but it was ruled out for an earlier foul.

There was still time for Alex Greenwood to go close for United and then Sigsworth saw a one-on-one effort saved by Liverpool and Germany goalkeeper Anke Preuss.

United keeper Siobhan Chamberlain was in action on the hour mark to save from Courtney Sweetman-Kirk after the defence failed to clear a corner.

Laura Coombs shot wide from distance but then Liverpool were almost behind as Leah Galton raced clear and saw her effort saved by Preuss.

Sweetman-Kirk brought the best out of Chamberlain as the game moved into the final 10 minutes and Leighanne Robe was lucky not to concede a penalty for handball.

Then United went ahead. Greenwood broke down the left and hammered a cross right across the box for Arnot to tap home at the back post.

United almost made it 2-0 as Preuss tipped Kirsty Smith's shot onto the bar. Then Liverpool nearly had a 87th minute equaliser as Christie Murray clattered a free kick off the base of the post, but they could not find a goal as the time ticked away.
