Claude Puel gets dream Leicester start as Brighton and Southampton draw

Leicester City got the Claude Puel era off to a perfect start with a comfortable 2-0 home win over Everton that deepened the Merseyside club's problems.

Leicester began the game on the front foot and threatened after only four minutes when Demarai Gray raced forward and sent a low drive just wide from outside the area.

But Puel's team had the lead they deserved with 18 minutes gone thanks to Jamie Vardy, who put the finishing touch to a swift counter involving Gray and Riyad Mahrez, and doubled it thanks to an own goal by young right-back Jonjoe Kenny with less than half an hour played.

Aaron Lennon felt he had been fouled inside the penalty area as David Unsworth's Everton tried to muster a response, but the referee waved away their appeals, and Kevin Mirallas lashed wide.

Glenn Murray's third goal in two games earned Brighton a home point against Southampton.

Murray struck early in the second half to secure a 1-1 draw for the hosts after Steven Davis had given Southampton an early lead.

The visitors got off to a fast start when Davis headed home the rebound after a James Ward-Prowse free kick had hit the crossbar, but Pascal Gross created the equaliser when his deep cross found Murray at the far post.
