Wayne Rooney rescues point for Everton, Saints and Newcastle draw

A late Wayne Rooney penalty snatched a 1-1 draw for Everton at Brighton.

The struggling Toffees were close to another defeat when Anthony Knockaert fired Brighton ahead eight minutes from time.

But Seagulls captain Bruno was penalised for fouling Dominic Calvert-Lewin with two minutes remaining and Rooney tucked home the equaliser.

However, the goal is unlikely to lift the pressure on Everton manager Ronald Koeman, whose out-of-sorts side are still without an away win since January.

Southampton and Newcastle shared the points in an 2-2 draw at St Mary's that came to life in an entertaining and end-to-end second half.

The home side have struggled in front of goal and faced another uphill battle when Newcastle took the lead after 25 minutes as Isaac Hayden drilled in from 25 yards after a blocked Christian Atsu shot had fallen to him.

The Saints were level early in the second half as Manolo Gabbiadini drifted away from a host of defenders and made room to fire into the corner, but they fell behind for a second time less than two minutes later when Ayoze Perez lashed past Fraser Forster from a tight angle.

But a further twist remained as, with 15 minutes left, Shane Long raced into the box and was felled by Florian Lejeune, with Gabbiadini lashing the penalty high into the net to ensure a share of the spoils.
