Luke Shaw, Sergio Romero start at Sunderland; Marouane Fellaini captain

Luke Shaw makes his first Manchester United start in over a month for Sunday's trip to Sunderland, while Sergio Romero makes a rare Premier League appearance in goal and Marouane Fellaini has been named as captain.

Shaw has not started since the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last month but returns to the XI after coming off the bench in the 1-1 draw against Everton on Tuesday.

United boss Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports of Shaw: "His attitude is improving, training is improving. Opportunities are coming -- it's a process of education as a player.

"A mistake can come, mistakes at Manchester United's level you pay for, but he's a young player and if his attitude improves, like it has done, hopefully he can start."

Romero makes his first league appearance of the season, with David De Gea being left out completely from the matchday squad.

"David has a little problem so he is not travelling," Mourinho said. "I think he'll be ready for the next match."

United next face Anderlecht in Thursday's Europa League quarterfinal first leg and Mourinho said that "normally Sergio starts in the Europa League," indicating that De Gea will return against Chelsea in the Premier League next weekend.

Pogba returns to the side after starting on the bench in the draw against Everton following his recovery from an injury picked up with France last month, while Matteo Darmian and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are also among the five changes Mourinho has made to his team from Tuesday's game.

United are in sixth place in the Premier League table, seven points off the top four, but can move ahead of Arsenal into fifth if they avoid defeat at the Stadium of Light.

United are currently on a 20-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, although half of those matches have ended in draws for Mourinho's side.

"Of course we need to score goals and hopefully we can today but we face a team in the last chance so it will be difficult," Mourinho added. "We're not scoring enough to win matches and because of that is a reflection of the points we have."

David Moyes makes one change to the Sunderland team that lost against Leicester in midweek, with Victor Anichebe returning to the XI after injury. Fabio Borini drops to the bench.

Sunderland, who are bottom and 10 points adrift of safety, have lost five of their last six games.
