Summer edition of Manchester derby could be played in the U.S. - sources

Manchester United could play Manchester City in the United States this summer in the first "derby" between the teams played outside England, sources have told ESPN FC.

City Football Group chief commercial officer Tom Glick revealed last July that City were planning to return to the U.S. this summer.

And United boss Jose Mourinho is understood to want to take his players to California to avoid the chaotic preseason preparations endured by his players in China earlier this year.

Sources told ESPN FC that the clubs have been in talks about the possibility of facing each other as part of their preseason tours.

City and United were due to face each other in Beijing in July 2016, but torrential rain meant the pitch at the Bird's Nest Stadium was unplayable and the game was called off less than six hours before kickoff.

Both clubs are expected to announce their full tour itineraries for the summer in the next few weeks.
