David Luiz: Chelsea changed to 'a defensive set-up' to face Liverpool

David Luiz told SFR Sport Chelsea had been forced to adopt a defensive mindset to get anything from Tuesday's testing trip to Liverpool.

And although it was only the second time Chelsea had failed to win in 16 games in all competitions, Luiz said Antonio Conte's men were happy with the point.

"We weren't surprised, every time we play here it is very difficult, it's hard," the former Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain defender said.

"They're a team that plays well, they're very good technically, with dynamic players, it is never easy. We played with a defensive set-up, because we knew that if we had come here with a different philosophy, it would have been difficult to win the match. We're a bit disappointed not to have won the match, but a point is good for us."

The draw looked all the better in the light of Arsenal's home defeat to Watford and Tottenham Hotspur's goalless draw at Sunderland that mean Chelsea extended their lead at the top of the table to nine points.

Mignolet's late heroics prevented the Blues from opening up a double-digit gap over their title rivals, and helped make amends for his first-half slip.

The Belgium international was not even looking at the ball as Luiz drilled it over an unprepared Liverpool wall and into the net via a post with Mignolet not ready.

"We try different things to surprise our opponents," Luiz added. "We try to not show what we're going to do."
