Liverpool-Chelsea rivalry was 'hatred for 90 minutes' - Steven Gerrard

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has told BT Sport he recalls his previous encounters with Chelsea as "hatred for 90 minutes."

Liverpool welcome Antonio Conte's Premier League leaders to Anfield on Tuesday night, hoping to record just their second win of 2017.

Gerrard, who nearly moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2005, featured in some classic encounters with Chelsea, both domestically and in the Champions League.

"I think the rivalry [between Liverpool and Chelsea] was bigger than what people thought," Gerrard said. "For me, being a Liverpool player and a Liverpool fan, to get any kind of success at some stage, we had to knock Chelsea out."

He said Chelsea "became the most powerful team and club" in terms of both finance and the players that arrived following Roman Abramovich's 2003 takeover.

He added: "For us to get any kind of success we knew we had to get the better of them.

"It's almost like hatred for 90 minutes. The feeling you get in your body is weird, but as soon as the final whistle [goes] you need to go back straight away to being respectful."

Meanwhile, Chelsea captain John Terry recalls the battles between him and ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher, as well Gerrard and Frank Lampard's duels.

"It was every year, for four of five years -- every Champions League draw we knew we were going to get you," Terry said.

"I always remember the rivalry over the years was you and Lamps [Frank Lampard] and me and Carra [Jamie Carragher].

"Kind of battling it out at international level and everything else, and I just always remember you and Carra being so into it."
