Aubameyang, Mahrez and Toure on BBC African Footballer of Year list

Leicester City and Algeria forward Riyad Mahrez and Borussia Dortmund and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lead the five-man shortlist for this year's BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

They are joined by Liverpool and Senegal striker Sadio Mane, West Ham United and Ghana's Andre Ayew, and Yaya Toure of Manchester City and Ivory Coast.

Mahrez scored 17 goals and provided 11 assists as Leicester stormed to a shock Premier League title success last season, and was voted the PFA Player of the Year by his peers.

He also netted twice to help Algeria reach the African Nations Cup, though his national team have suffered a poor start to World Cup qualifying and defeat to Nigeria on Saturday leaves their hopes of being in Russia slim.

Aubameyang netted 25 Bundesliga goals for Dortmund, and has already plundered another 11 this term. He will be a crucial player when Gabon host the African Nations Cup in January.

Mane scored 11 Premier League goals for Southampton last term before he became the most expensive African player in history when joining Liverpool for £34 million. He has already scored six goals in a strong start at his new club, though they will have to do without him when the African Nations Cup comes around.

Ayew, winner of the award in 2011, scored three goals in qualifying as Ghana coasted to the African Nations Cup, but their World Cup campaign has faltered with just one point claimed for their first two qualifiers. He scored 12 Premier League goals for Swansea last season, but injury has restricted him to just 128 minutes of league football since he was signed by West Ham during the window.

The final nominee is the currently holder Toure, who also won the award in 2013. He would seem an unlikely candidate to win for a third time having scored just six times for City last season and having been ostracised from the first team since Pep Guardiola took over at the Etihad.

Fans have until 18.00 GMT on Nov. 28 to vote, with the winner being unveiled on Dec 12.

Aubameyang won the CAF African Player of the Year award last year, which is handed out in January.
