Bastian Schweinsteiger can help Man United - Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer says Manchester United should turn to Bastian Schweinsteiger to lift them out of their current dip in form.

Former Bayern midfielder Schweinsteiger has not been considered by Jose Mourinho this season, but Neuer says the former Germany captain is just the man United need right now.

"It's hard to assess the situation from Munich," Neuer told a news conference in Munich. "It's naturally also difficult when you are training on your own and not with the team.

"You almost have to really feel sorry for him the way he's been treated at the start. I really hope that Basti will be picked. We all know that he's undeniably one of the best midfielders in the world.

"Therefore, he should be playing on the pitch for a side like Manchester United, not on an amateur pitch nor training on his own."

The 32-year-old has knuckled down in a bid to prove Mourinho wrong for leaving him out of his plans in the summer.

Neuer is not the only one calling for Schweinsteiger to be given a chance. While United were trailing Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday, his former Germany teammate Lukas Podolski tweeted "Schweinsteiger please."

Schweinsteiger's last game was for his country in a testimonial last month. He last pulled on a United shirt in the Manchester derby in March, with injury bringing his first Premier League season to a premature conclusion.

United are in the midst of a poor run of form, winning only four of their last 10 games.
