Liverpool and Man United fans praised by police for behaviour at Anfield

Merseyside police have praised Liverpool and Manchester United supporters for their "exemplary" behaviour during Monday night's goalless draw at Anfield.

The clubs issued a joint statement prior to game, which urged fans to behave or face ejection, and potentially prosecution, for any "offensive or discriminatory behavior."

Troubled marred last season's Europa League meeting in March where both clubs were fined by UEFA for crowd disturbances and "illicit chanting."

Merseyside Police's match commander superintendent Paul White, said: "I would like to thank the fans of both clubs for their exemplary behaviour on Monday night, before, during and after the game.

"There is a great rivalry between our fans and it was pleasing to see supporters being respectful throughout a game watched in over 200 countries."

The Daily Telegraph that despite a banner referencing the Munich Air Disaster having to be removed from a bridge over the M62 -- where a large portion of United fans would be travelling down to Liverpool -- the match itself appeared to pass without incident.
