71 Premier League starters eligible to play for England in last gameweek

The English Football Association has revealed that of the 220 players who started in the Premier League in the latest gameweek, 71 were eligible to play for England.

There have long been concerns that the English top flight has not been producing enough home-grown players and the FA's latest statistics show that 32.3 percent of the last matchweek's starters could be selected for the national team.

That figure is lower than the average to date for Premier League starters in each gameweek in the 2016-17 season who are eligible to play for England, which is 33.4 percent.

Matchweek eight in the Premier League included fixtures such as Liverpool vs. Manchester United, Chelsea vs. Leicester and Manchester City vs. Everton.

Of the 27 goals scored during the latest gameweek, 13 of these were scored by players eligible to play for England.

The FA's statistics come at a time when England are currently searching for a new manager following Sam Allardyce's dismissal after just one game after he was involved in an undercover sting.

His predecessor, Roy Hodgson, was dismissed after England crashed out of Euro 2016 at the round-of-16 stage to Iceland.
