Wayne Rooney on Man United bench as Ashley Young starts at Liverpool

Wayne Rooney is on the bench again as Manchester United prepare to face Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night.

It is the third consecutive Premier League game in which Rooney has failed to break into Jose Mourinho's starting XI, while he also came off the bench in the Europa League last month.

Mourinho made two changes from Man United's previous game two weeks ago against Stoke, with Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young entering the side in place of Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard.

Young starts for the first time in the Premier League since January, also at Anfield, when he came off injured in the first half.

United also confirmed that Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin will miss the game after suffering injuries in training on Saturday.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp dropped Adam Lallana to the bench with Daniel Sturridge returning to the starting XI after scoring for England against Malta during the international break.

Lallana picked up an issue with his groin in the win at Swansea City prior to the international break, while Emre Can starts in place of Georginio Wijnaldum, who was injured on duty with Netherlands last week.

Man United's starting XI: David De Gea; Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind; Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba; Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera, Ashley Young; Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Liverpool's starting XI: Loris Karius; Nathaniel Clyne, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren, James Milner; Jordan Henderson, Emre Can; Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane; Daniel Sturridge
