Charlie Austin inspires Southampton to win vs. Burnley, Watford beat Boro

Charlie Austin struck a brace as Southampton recorded a 3-1 Premier League victory at home to Burnley.

Southampton dominated the first half at St Mary's, with Burnley keeper Tom Heaton pulling off impressive saves to deny both Austin and Dusan Tadic.

The Saints, however, found the breakthrough soon after the restart as Austin forced the ball over the line from close range against his former club, who had failed to deal with a corner.

The home side then doubled their lead eight minutes later with Nathan Redmond rifling home a strike into the bottom corner, before Austin made it three in the 66th minute, converting a penalty after Johann Gudmundsson had brought down Sam McQueen in the area.

Sam Vokes pulled one back for Burnley from the penalty spot after Tadic had fouled Ben Mee, but it proved to be just a consolation goal for the visitors as Southampton moved up to eighth with the win.

Watford climbed into the top half of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough thanks to Jose Holebas' second-half strike.

The sides played out a largely incident-free first half at the Riverside Stadium, aside from Boro right-back Antonio Barragan avoiding a dismissal for pulling Isaac Success, which could have earned him a second yellow card.

But Holebas livened up proceedings after the break with a left-foot shot from outside the area that flew into the top corner of Victor Valdes' goal. That 54th-minute strike was the Hornets' first shot on target of the afternoon.

Boro's Gaston Ramirez looked to have been pulled to the ground in the penalty area by Miguel Britos shortly after the hour mark but saw his appeal dismissed by referee Roger East.
