Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan was advised to leave Borussia Dortmund for the Premier League by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Gundogan, 25, left Dortmund after five years to join City this summer and scored on his Premier League debut in the 4-0 win against Bournemouth.

"He told me the style of play fits me perfectly," the Germany international told Sport Bild.

"I asked him for advice as to whether the Premier League is the right place for me. He approved it and told me that I'd feel comfortable and the style of play fits me perfectly. It was nice, that confirmed my impression."

Gundogan was linked with a switch to the Etihad ever since pictures of his uncle and agent Ilhan Gundogan meeting City sporting director Txiki Begiristain in Amsterdam surfaced in early March, and he confirmed Pep Guardiola made huge efforts to sign him.

"I was the very first player he wanted to sign and I was injured at that time. That speaks volumes, I believe," Gundogan said, and praised the Catalan's "aura" and "unbelievable charisma."

He added: "Everyone with a bit of football knowledge can see that football under Pep has always been and is extremely dominant, but also extremely successful."
