Ilkay Gundogan hails Jurgen Klopp, labels Pep Guardiola 'best in the world'

Ilkay Gundogan has praised former coach Jurgen Klopp but described his Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as "the best in the world."

Germany international Gundogan won the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal double under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund in 2012 before they reached the Champions League final the following season.

Klopp left the Bundesliga side last season to join Liverpool and Gundogan has now followed him to the Premier League but the pair won't come up against each other until Dec. 31.

"Both are world-class managers with their own qualities," Gundogan said of Guardiola and Klopp in City's matchday programme.

"It wouldn't be fair to say Jurgen is more emotional but when you see him on the sidelines living every minute, it's not hard to understand why Dortmund were so successful under him.

"Pep is equally passionate but in a different way. He is more like a genius who reads the game and covers every situation imaginable.

"He is always showing us how to create space and find solutions and there is no manager like him, which makes him probably the best in the world."

The 25-year-old made his Premier League debut in City's 4-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday -- scoring the fourth and his first goal for the club.

His first appearance for the club came on Wednesday in the 4-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Monchengladbach after David Silva was rested as a precaution.

With Silva set to return and teammates Fernandinho and Kevin De Bruyne starting the season in fine fashion, Gundogan knows he is in a battle for a starting place but his happy to fit wherever Guardiola wants him to play.

"Of course, by nature I'm a central midfielder -- a number six, eight or 10 -- but it depends how the manager wants to play," he added.

"What I've seen so far is that we all need to be very flexible in all positions because nobody will stay for 30 minutes in the same role because we're changing all the time.

"The most important thing is that we have a good build-up and that every player knows what they have to do so it doesn't matter which role the manager gives me, I just need to try my best wherever I'm asked to play."
