Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool ran out of energy in Europa final - Alex Ferguson

Liverpool's pressing game under Jurgen Klopp took its toll in their Europa League final defeat to Sevilla, according to former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Liverpool took the lead through Daniel Sturridge in May's final but Sevilla hit back with Kevin Gameiro on target and Coke scoring a brace as the Spanish side secured a 3-1 win.

Klopp is famous for implementing high-intensity tactics, and Ferguson said in a UEFA technical report reviewing the 2015-16 season that the German's Reds side ultimately felt the effects of a draining campaign.

"In the second half Liverpool had no energy, they could not get to the ball," UEFA coaching ambassador Ferguson said. "The space in midfield became bigger. I never had a team who could press a ball all season."

Ferguson went on to praise Klopp's attitude with the former Borussia Dortmund manager particularly impressing him in Liverpool's 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in December 2015.

"Even at Newcastle when they lost the second goal he goes over to Steve McClaren to congratulate him," he said.

"That's class. And the work he did at Dortmund. He's going to make a difference at that club with his personality, drive and knowledge. Things are looking up there. I'm worried about him because the one thing United don't want is Liverpool to get above us."
