Manchester United's Wayne Rooney should quit England role - Shearer

Wayne Rooney should retire from international football to make sure he remains part of the team at Manchester United, former England captain Alan Shearer has said.

Shearer retired from international duty at the age of 29 and kept playing for Newcastle United until he was 36.

Rooney will have to wait until Tuesday before Sam Allardyce announces publicly if he will remain as England captain after being listed in the latest squad as a midfielder rather than a forward, although the England manager told a news conference on Monday that he will use the 30-year-old in the No. 10 role.

In his column in the Sun, Shearer wrote: "This is a Manchester United squad of real depth and power and Rooney needs to be producing at the highest level to make sure he stays in it.

"It is time for Rooney to be selfish and start thinking just about himself. And that, I really regret to say, means his retirement from international football.

"I don't say this in the belief that he is no longer good enough for England -- he is. But he is 30 now and captaining your club and country, satisfying the demand to play at the top level for both, gets harder."

Rooney drew praise from Shearer for the way that he created United's goal in the 1-0 win at Hull City on Saturday, evading Ahmed Elmohamady before delivering for Marcus Rashford to finish.

"I don't think there was anyone else on the pitch who could have done that. Rooney still possesses magic in those boots, even if they don't go as quickly as they used to," he wrote.
