Wayne Rooney backs Mike Phelan for Hull manager's job on permanent basis

Wayne Rooney has backed former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan to do a "good job" if he is given the Hull City job on a permanent basis, ahead of the sides' meeting on Saturday.

Phelan is in caretaker charge at Hull following the departure of Steve Bruce on July 22 and has guided the newly promoted side to victories in their opening two Premier League games of the season.

Rooney, who worked with Phelan throughout the 53-year-old's five years as No. 2 at the club, told MUTV: "He obviously worked with Sir Alex Ferguson for a long time and played under him. Hull have started off great this season and I'm sure, if he gets the opportunity to manage full time, he'll do a good job."

During Phelan's five years as United's assistant manager, the club reached the Champions League final twice, losing to Barcelona on both occasions, and won three Premier League titles plus two League Cups.

Phelan left United following the arrival of David Moyes in 2013. In his book 'Leading', Ferguson criticised Moyes' decision to remove Phelan, who went on to become Bruce's assistant in February 2015.
