Crystal Palace's Christian Benteke needed 'trust' at Liverpool

Christian Benteke has said a lack of "trust" from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp led to his difficult spell on Merseyside.

Benteke joined Crystal Palace in a deal worth £32 million on Saturday after just one season spent at Liverpool following his £32.5 m move from Aston Villa.

The Belgium international was frozen out at Anfield as he struggled to adapt Liverpool's pressing style when Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers back in October.

"A lot of things happened at Liverpool," Benteke told Palace's official website. "When I arrived it was with Brendan Rodgers as manager, but then he was sacked and Jurgen [Klopp] came in and had his own plan, but that's part of football.

"I could have done better but I think I also needed some trust from the manager and the staff."

Despite his unsuitability to the Reds' system, Benteke went on to score 10 goals in all competitions last season. The powerful forward, 25, is now looking forward to playing in Alan Pardew's side and feels the team's approach suits his abilities.

"I feel really happy that the deal has been done and now I can look forward because it's been going on for a long time," he added. "But now I think everything is going to be OK.

"I've met the manager a few times before I signed and that's why I wanted to come here. I was really happy to hear about his project and that is why I am excited to come here.

"I did my own research too and there are some great wingers here and because of that I think I can be a success here."
