Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe laments error for Man United opener

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe was left to lament Manchester United being gifted the opening goal as his side lost 3-1 at home on Sunday.

Bournemouth defender Simon Francis under-hit his pass back to goalkeeper Artur Boruc, allowing United midfielder Juan Mata to latch on to the ball with only the keeper to beat.

The Spaniard's first effort was well-saved by Boruc, but the ball then came off Francis and back to Mata, who slotted it home to give Jose Mourinho's side a 1-0 lead.

Speaking to reporters, Howe said the error had changed the complexion of the match.

"The game was on a knife-edge until the first goal,'' he said.

"The way the goal's come about was a hard one to take, because it looked as though we'd got away with the mistake, and then for the unlucky ricochet we concede.

"And that moment's tough, when you give a team like Manchester United the lead.''
