Jack Wilshere: Fans right to boo England players after Euro 2016

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says England players should expect to get booed by Premier League crowds after the team's loss to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Wilshere, who came on as a substitute after half-time in the 2-1 loss to Iceland in the round of 16, said the England players have to work to "win the trust of the country back" after the embarrassing result. Until then, he said they'll have to live with being jeered.

"Yes, I think so, because we know that we were not good enough," Wilshere told reporters. "We know that we didn't reach the heights that the country expected us to meet. We didn't perform. And for us, as well, the main thing is to look at ourselves.

"We, as players, know that we were not good enough. Of course we let the fans down. We know that England fans are passionate, and they are going to show their frustration towards us."

Despite the disappointing exit, Wilshere said playing at the Euros was good for him after missing most of the Premier League season with a broken ankle. He ended up finishing the summer with more appearances for England than for Arsenal.

"The Euros were frustrating but I was happy to go to them," Wilshere said. "It was so important that I managed to go and play some part because of the frustrating season I'd had. If I'd missed the Euros, it would have been tough on me, mentally and physically, because I would have had seven weeks off and that was the last thing I needed after having seven or eight months off in the season."

The midfielder is now injured again, this time with a minor knee injury that will keep him out of Sunday's league opener against Liverpool but probably not much longer.

And he said last year's ankle injury, which was caused by a reckless challenge in training the day before the Community Shield, has taught him to be a bit more careful on the pitch.

"I know my body better than ever now and I know what it can and can't do," Wilshere said. "The target for me this year is to play as many games as possible. I don't want to be setting any ridiculous targets.

"The main one for me is to play as many games as I can until Christmas, then reassess. What I can't do is go into ridiculous challenges, especially in training. It's more difficult in a game but in training I can take myself out of those situations. It is something I will definitely be working on -- not going into challenges that are 20-80."
