Sizing up Everton's struggles, outlook

Roberto Martinez's tenure at Everton is at a crucial juncture. Long runs in cup competitions are glossing over back-to-back mediocre Premier League campaigns. On the surface, the team appears stuffed with talent and promise with Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and John Stones all attracting the attention of wealthier clubs looking to retool. Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman are two of the most reliable full-backs in the league and Gerard Deulofeu showed sparks of creative brilliance in the early season. Heading into the 2015-16 campaign, Martinez's third season, it was important to show progression and growth. But now the promise of fifth place in 2013-14 seems long ago and mid-table has become a little too familiar.
