Manchester United shirt sponsorship double Barcelona's - study

Manchester United's shirt sponsorship was the most lucrative in Europe this season -- worth around double of Barcelona's -- and helped the Premier League bring in £260 million in total, according to a study into deals across the continent.

United benefited from a seven-year deal worth £52m-a-season with Chevrolet, the American car company, which they signed in 2012, while Barcelona earned around £26m-a-year from their sponsorship by Qatar Airways, according to The Repucom European Football Jersey Report.

The study also showed that the Premier League brought in almost twice as much money from shirt sponsorships than their nearest competitor, the Bundesliga, which generated £133m.

Both of those leagues enjoyed rises on figures from a year ago, with the Premier League having gone up from £193m and the Bundesliga from £124m.

La Liga (£83m) and Serie A (£66m) were way behind -- and actually suffered a decrease in revenue compared to the previous season. A year ago, La Liga had brought in £90m and Serie A had £67m.
