Hull relegated, Newcastle survive, Liverpool embarrassed at Stoke

Hull City were relegated from the Premier League as Newcastle United stayed up, while Liverpool suffered a humiliating 6-1 loss at Stoke City in Steven Gerrard's final game for the club.

Moussa Sissoko and Jonas Gutierrez were Newcastle's heroes as they secured a 2-0 win for John Carver's team against West Ham to ensure the Magpies preserved their top-flight status.

Emmanuel Riviere had a golden chance to put Newcastle in front early in the second half but he hit an air shot after good work from Daryl Janmaat down the right.

Seconds later, however, Newcastle made the breakthrough when Sissoko crashed in a header from Gutierrez's cross, sending the St James' Park crowd wild.

And the result was put beyond any doubt when Gutierrez's deflected shot found its way beyond goalkeeper Adrian.

That result meant Hull were doomed regardless, as Steve Bruce's men played out a goalless draw against Manchester United.

During the first half, Hull twice had the ball in the back of the United net in the space of a minute, only for both efforts to be ruled out for offside.

Hull continued to create chances but a combination of disappointing finishing and some smart goalkeeping from Victor Valdes frustrated the home side at the KC Stadium, as their fate was confirmed.

Before the full-time whistle, Marouane Fellaini was given a straight red card for a stamp on Paul McShane.

Gerrard's final match for Liverpool ended miserably as Stoke heaped the pressure on Reds manager Brendan Rodgers with a remarkable 6-1 win for Mark Hughes' men.

Liverpool fell behind on 21 minutes as Mame Biram Diouf pounced on goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's parry, lifting the ball into the roof of the net.

Diouf doubled Stoke's lead four minutes later, shooting powerfully from the edge of the box after being assisted by Marko Arnautovic.

Jonathan Walters piled the misery on Liverpool, making it 3-0 with his head after his initial shot was spilled.

Charlie Adam made it 4-0 in the 41st minute, guiding a low shot past goalkeeper Mignolet after dispossessing Lucas Leiva.

Incredibly, it was 5-0 before the break as Steven Nzonzi curled in a wonderful goal from around 25 yards out for Mark Hughes' side.

Gerrard, who will join LA Galaxy in the summer, pulled a goal back for Liverpool in the second half, slotting beyong goalkeeper Asmir Begovic after latching onto Rickie Lambert's header.

But Stoke sealed their emphatic victory through Peter Crouch, who passed Alan Shearer's record for most headed Premier League goals with his 47th.

The result ensured Liverpool finished sixth in the Premier League table.

Elsewhere, Theo Walcott scored a hat trick as Arsenal triumphed 4-1 over West Brom at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal took the lead in the fifth minute when Theo Walcott collected Santi Cazorla's pass and then hammered a shot into the top corner.

Walcott grabbed his and Arsenal's second of the game nine minutes later, poking the ball past goalkeeper Boaz Myhill following a run by Jack Wilshere.

It was then Wilshere's turn to get his name on the scoresheet, striking into the corner from the edge of the area.

Walcott completed his hat trick before half-time, rounding off a fine passing move by the Gunners to make it 4-0 against West Brom.

West Brom pulled a goal back just before the hour mark, Gareth McAuley nodding in from Chris Brunt's corner.

Premier League champions Chelsea won 3-1 against Sunderland before lifting the trophy at Stamford Bridge.

Sunderland, safe after their draw at Arsenal on Wednesday, took a shock lead on 27 minutes when Steven Fletcher headed in from Adam Johnson's corner.

After Didier Drogba was carried off in his final game for Chelsea, the Premier League champions equalised as Diego Costa scored from the penalty spot after Juan Cuadrado was brought down by John O'Shea.

Chelsea's comeback was complete in the 70th minute as Loic Remy's low shot found its way past goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

And Remy grabbed his second of the game, latching onto Nemanja Matic's cross before finishing from close range.

Manchester City rounded off their season with three points as they beat Southampton 2-0 with Frank Lampard and Sergio Aguero on target.

Lampard, captaining City on the day, made it 1-0 to the home side as he accurately slotted in after receiving a pass from James Milner.

Aguero netted his 26th league goal of the season to seal all three points, nodding in from close range for Manuel Pellegrini's team.

Tottenham climbed above Liverpool to finish fifth in the table as Harry Kane's goal clinched a 1-0 win and three points at Everton.

Kane netted his 21st Premier League goal of the season, heading in from Eric Dier's cross on 24 minutes in the only goal of the match.

Leicester City finished their season on a high with a 5-1 victory over relegated Queens Park Rangers.

Jamie Vardy, off the back of his England call-up, made it 1-0 to Leicester in the 17th minute, reacting quickest after Riyad Mahrez's shot was not held by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

Leicester took a two-goal lead through Marc Albrighton, who smashed a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Two goals early in the second half made it 4-0 to Leicester as Leonardo Ulloa and then Esteban Cambiasso got their names on the scoresheet.

Charlie Austin scored a consolation for QPR, before Andrej Kramaric capped a fine result for Nigel Pearson's men.

Elsewhere, Marouane Chamakh helped Crystal Palace to a 1-0 win over Swansea, while relegated Burnley defeated Aston Villa 1-0 via Danny Ings' early goal.
