Paul Pogba's Man United exit baffles Juventus' Gianluigi Buffon

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has said Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to marginalise Paul Pogba at Manchester United is one of the strangest things he has encountered.

Pogba spent three years at Old Trafford but never started a first-team match for United, and has previously said he was particularly annoyed not to start the December 2011 defeat to Blackburn, when Ferguson fielded Ji-Sung Park and Rafael da Silva out of position in the centre of midfield instead of him.

The France international moved to Juventus when his contract expired in 2012 and has now won the Serie A title three times in succession.

"I have been in football many years, but the decision of Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United to not play Pogba and let him leave is one of the strangest I have ever seen," Buffon, 37, said in the Daily Express.

He added: "After just a few training sessions we saw how good he was. It cannot have been the same player they saw in Manchester -- we thought they maybe needed glasses.

"I have never seen a player who is so good at his age, he is so strong, so technically gifted, has exceptional all-round play."

Juventus only had to pay £800,000 in compensation for Pogba and Buffon, who feels the midfielder ranks along with the top talents in the game, said: "Pogba can do things only Pogba can, similar to [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo.

"United let one of the top players in the world leave but that has been only good news for us."

Pogba's agent has previously said the midfielder could cost clubs €100 million, and Buffon feels the 22-year-old could become the world's most expensive player.

"Of course he will be linked with the teams with big money like Chelsea, Real Madrid, PSG and City, but at the moment he is achieving dreams at Juventus," he said.

"If any team wanted to buy him I would feel sure they would have to break the world record fee."

Pogba is set to face Real Madrid on Wednesday as Juventus seek to reach the Champions League final for the first time in 12 years.
