Why James Milner makes the list

He's perhaps the only player to come out of Manchester City's miserable title defence with his reputation enhanced, but that is important for far more reasons than just James Milner's credibility. This feels like the season in which his true worth and value were finally recognised, and it is both symbolic and significant that it ends with him set to leave City, and so many leading clubs looking to sign him.

Milner is no boring English prototype nor a limited workhorse. He is a tactically intelligent player with plenty of technique, as indicated when he spent some of the midseason playing up front. Milner can fill in many positions and is no mere filler in a squad; he is a hugely valuable asset. This campaign made that clear.

The stats that tell the story

- His five Premier League goals this season are his second most in a league season, trailing only the seven he scored in 2009-10 with Aston Villa. His seven league assists are his most since he had 12 that same season with Villa.
- Sent in 126 crosses this season, second most for Man City behind Jesus Navas (242).

What the experts say

"Speak to City fans and supporters of Aston Villa, Newcastle and Leeds, and the picture looks a bit different. They'll tell you of a utility player who is accomplished in many different positions on the pitch, with a dash of skill, an unnerving level of stamina, a large range of passing and shooting options available to him, and a great sense of positioning." -- David Mooney, May 2015.

"The midfielder has only added to his stock further in the contract talks, and he showed what City would be missing if they can't convince him to put pen to paper. He was imperious on the left flank and solid when moved into the centre late on." -- David Mooney, January 2015.

"It amounted to a happy birthday for James Milner. He turned 29 on Sunday with his first goals against English opposition since 2013 to spare Manchester City an embarrassing and early exit from the FA Cup. It also emphasised why they need to get his signature on a new contract." -- Richard Jolly, January 2015.
