Top targets for Van Gaal, Man United

The appointment of Louis van Gaal as Manchester United's manager is finally complete, effectively ending a turbulent season that exposed a number of warts both on and off the field at the club, one in which the team failed to qualify for European competition for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

The Dutch national team manager will take over United at the end of the Netherlands' World Cup run, and his first order of business will be targeting players in the transfer market who can quickly return United to both domestic contention and European competition. This is no easy task, especially considering the catch-22 of needing money to secure world-class players while losing out on added revenue as a result of not qualifying for European competition.

Based on the key positions where United is in need of an upgrade (left back, center back, attacking midfield) and the manager's tactics and style of play, here are three players whom Van Gaal and Manchester United should make an extra push to secure in this summer's transfer window.
